ivy espalier vine

Some trees have a growth habit that lends itself to the FAN espalier pattern.

Above: This Prunus sp. espalier is trained to fit the space between rustic pillars at the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden. It can be closely inspected front and back. This cherry fan is also stunning when viewed from a distance twelve months a year.

Below
: A garden writer stands in front of some cherry fans in earlier stages of development. The permanent framework is a trellis already attractive while the espaliers take a few more years to reach maturity.
